Choosing a Base[]

When looking for a base, a number of things should be taken into account. Nearby water sources, for when the taps dry up, but also for fishing to get more food, Scavenging opportunities, which will become harder and harder as time goes on, so being near a large number of scavengeable buildings will help, Nearby gas stations, to keep engines and generators running, A low zombie population, so that you can sleep without worrying about death, ample storage space and enough containers, to hold all the items you will likely hoard, and also pre-existing fences, which will make dealing with incoming zombies a lot easier. A base should preferably have at least 3 if you plan for an extended stay.

Fortifying a Base[]

Security House

A Well-Fortified Base

When you've settled down and chosen a base, you should start to think about fortifying it and with what. Sheets will only keep the dead looking away if you are silent, and you'll eventually make noise. To board up windows, you'll need a hammer and planks. Each Plank provides 10 HP (depending on durability) and up to 4 can be placed upon each side NOTE: Zombies can see inside if only 1 or 2 planks are used, as planks only blocks view at 3 of them. These planks can also be removed, but if they have been damaged by zombies they will have lowered durability. Should the player have a welder with fuel on hand, along with a metal plate, they could instead choose to board up the window with metal. This will be much stronger than wood, but can only be done once on either side. Each of these has 100 durability and blocks sight.
